Expertise Laundering: How AI Is Flooding the Market with Thought Leaders

The email arrived on a Tuesday afternoon somewhere between my third and fourth coffee. I was about to have a conversation I was already half-dreading and so welcomed the reprieve. The subject line read "Turn your experience into $5k–$15k retainers like clockwork."

Honestly, I almost deleted it. I've been inundated with offers from fractional companies offering me unlimited clients and opportunities to work as little as possible from anywhere I chose. But the timing was strange enough to make me pause. I'd spent my morning inside a fractional CTO platform's on-boarding flow. I enrolled in their platform purely out of curiosity and to see how these businesses actually work from the inside out. The platform had positioned itself as a matching service with deep client relationships, rigorous placement opportunities, senior operators building real advisory work and having great impact. What I found instead was a library of hundreds of pre-built playbooks, a guided Claude Project workflow for generating deliverables, and session after session on landing retainers, marketing strategies, how to not trade time for money, and how to avoid any kind of hourly commitment. The client work was the assumed projects outcome with the retainer being the product.

So when an email promoting a further ready-made fractional service showed up in my inbox with its promise to package whatever you've achieved in your career into a recurring revenue machine, it didn't feel like spam. It felt like confirmation that something isn't quite right with the fractional market.

I've been in enterprise technology for 25 years having started my career in network engineering. Fifteen of those years I spent leading engineering teams of various different flavors. I've been on-site during a major ransomware attack at a Fortune 500 enterprise with hundreds of locations, hundreds of engineers, tens of thousands of employees. I've negotiated hundreds of millions in vendor savings over my career. I've walked into organizations where the technology strategy was a PowerPoint with confident numbers and no plan. That experience has given me a set of tools and patterns that immediately triggers something subconsciously, and I know what it looks like when someone has done the work and when someone has read about it.

Fractional executives started off genuinely as experts looking to expand their network, maybe eventually positioning themselves for a board seat or an advisory role. They were deep experts with years of experience, practical solutions and a real executive presence. What's happening in the fractional executive market right now is something I've started calling "Expertise Laundering."

What Laundering Means

The term 'laundering' comes from the financial world, where money of a suspicious origin is run through enough legitimate-looking transactions that it emerges clean on the other side. The source is obscured and the output looks legal.

Expertise laundering works in a similar way. You take AI-generated content, frameworks, assessments, technology roadmaps, thought leadership pieces. You publish it, share it, attach your name to it, and iterate until the accumulated output reads like lived experience. The production cost has collapsed to near zero. But the signals buyers use to assess expertise haven't changed. Publication still reads as credibility. Volume still reads as depth. And a library of polished work still suggests someone who has thought about these problems for years.

Here's what makes this more than a nuisance. The gap between the original expertise required to produce something and the apparent expertise it projects is the entire mechanism.

I use AI every day. I disclose it on our website and clearly talk about where we use AI and where we don't. The distinction is between using AI to extend your thinking and using AI to substitute for thinking you haven't done. One amplifies what you know, while the other manufactures the appearance of knowing something you don't. Most people can't tell the difference from the outside.

The fractional CTO market alone has grown to $5.7 billion at 14% annual growth (Fractionus/ConsultKit, 2026). The number of LinkedIn profiles claiming "fractional CTO" grew from roughly 2,000 to over 110,000 between 2022 and 2024 (LinkedIn data, 2024). That's a 55x increase in two years. Enterprise technology expertise, skills, roles and jobs didn't scale 55x. So something else is responsible for the growth.

The Platform Visit

When I went through that on-boarding with a well known fractional CxO organization, I expected to find a vetting gauntlet. Some kind of proof-of-work, expertise, verifiable claims backed up by data. Instead, I found business development and marketing training, with endless content about how to price retainers, how to scope engagements, how to position yourself on LinkedIn. The playbooks were pre-created, available and encouraged to be utilized covering every major technology decision an enterprise might face. These were pre-built by someone, somewhere, with no validation, verification or proof of accuracy. These were ready to customize to kick-start your own consulting practice. Then there was the session on how to set up a Claude Project workflow and how to use it to accelerate client deliverables.

To be fair, it's not unusual for experienced practitioners to need business development skills. There's nothing inherently wrong with frameworks, and playbooks can be useful scaffolding. But the value proposition wasn't "we help great operators build a practice." It was "we help you productize your expertise into a repeatable recurring revenue stream." The explicit model was 12 retainers at 20 hours a week total. One hour and forty minutes per client. At $5,000 a month each, that's $40,000 MRR at an effective rate of around $1,250 per hour. And all of this focusing on doing as little work as possible while fractional execs are passing off pre-built playbooks as inherent industry knowledge.

If we follow the math we see that AI can compress deliverable production from 10 hours to 90 minutes, thus more retainers fit into our working week. The efficiency gain doesn't flow to deeper and more meaningful client work. It flows to more clients, with as little touch as possible. The business model structurally rewards volume, not depth. Nobody discloses this in the initial conversation when looking to hire a fractional executive.

A colleague in a different industry described the telehealth company Medvi to me last week. This is the health company currently under investigation for supposedly using fake doctor profiles, deepfaked patient testimonials. Countless FDA warning letters were sent and seemingly ignored with what appears to be only 2 employees. He called it an extreme version of a pattern that he sees routinely in his advisory services. The Medvi case allegedly involved actual fraud and regulatory violations. And while most fractional operators aren't criminals, for some there is an underlying dynamic. Credentials without qualifications and appearance without substance. This in itself sits on a wide spectrum from those highly skilled fractional executives at one end of the scale to out right misleading customers on the other.

The prebuilt fractional business model email that arrived during my drafting session was more candid than most. "Turns your experience into $5k–$15k retainers like clockwork." The box is the product. Your experience is just assumed raw material, no validation and no credential checking. You're welcome to bring any experience you have with the goal they'll help you turn it into something that looks like advisory work backed up by pre-built playbooks.

When the Framework Meets the Room

There are things a playbook cannot do.

It cannot read the comment thread on a pull request and tell you that the team's technical debt is covering for organizational dysfunction two layers above them. It cannot walk into a vendor negotiation where the other side knows your renewal is in 30 days and your CEO is asking questions, and decide in real time how much of your position to reveal. It cannot sit in a board meeting, watch the room go quiet after a bad number, and figure out whether the silence is confusion or already-decided. It cannot be wrong in front of a team at 2am and still maintain their confidence in the morning.

Judgment, and ultimately wisdom comes from repetition under pressure with visible consequences. That's not a poetic or extreme observation. It's the actual mechanism for what is effectively a constant training ground with failure around every door. The situations where something real was at stake and where you had to make the call without enough information. Where you got it wrong and had to fix it. Those are the experiences that compound into the ability to diagnose a new situation accurately. The mental models, the pattern matching, the gut-wrenching nausea of being able to see how a bad decision is going to play out. No framework or set of pre-published playbooks exists for that accumulation.

The research on AI-generated advisory content suggests there is already a structural problem. GPTZero in 2024 found that 70% of top Substack newsletters showed significant LLM reliance in their content. Pangram Labs found 47% of Medium articles were AI-generated and published their finding in Wired magazine 2024. Originality AI put that figure above 40% for Medium based articles specifically. The thought leadership content that buyers read to assess advisory expertise is itself at substantial scale, AI-generated.

The credential that once required expensive personal investment time, access, real situations, a track record of outcomes, now simply requires almost nothing with everyone being listed as an expert. The buyer's ability to distinguish hasn't caught up and bad decisions are going to be made because of it.

What to Ask Before the Crisis Arrives

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, there are genuinely some amazing fractional executives, with a demonstrated pedigree. The challenge at the moment is that most of the growth in the last 2 years has been the product of a mass marketing agency factory.

So before you choose your next fractional executive, I'm going to give you six signals. Not because I like lists, but because I've been on the other side of this table enough times to know that vague advice doesn't help when you're trying to decide whether to bring someone in. I've also been the fractional executive that has been called in after projects went awry, technology didn't work as anticipated, or simply AI was oversold and the adoption failed.

Practitioner origin. Ask where they built their expertise before the advisory work. Not "what companies did you advise." But ask revealing question. What did you operate? How large was the team? What did you own? Advisors with authentic backgrounds answer this specifically and with texture, there's a story, and experience they can recall. Manufactured credentials produce polished generalities and empty metrics.

Specificity of failure. Ask them to describe a decision that cost them something. Not a "learning experience" framed as a humblebrag. A real failure with consequences they had to absorb. All great leaders have more failures than successes, if they can't access one from memory quickly, that's a data point.

Vendor negotiation record. Ask for a specific example where they negotiated against a vendor and what leverage they used. Real operators recall specific moments — nail-biting last-minute additions, contract language fought for at the eleventh hour, leverage that was manufactured under pressure. Playbook-trained advisors have frameworks and methodologies.

Crisis response. Ask what they did the last time something went wrong at scale. Not the framework for incident response, what actually happened, what they did first, what they'd do differently. The specificity here is the signal.

Organizational dysfunction diagnosis. Ask them to describe a situation where the technical problem was actually an organizational one. This requires pattern recognition that develops over years. Talk about meaningful KPI's such as employee satisfaction or survey engagement and participation. AI can describe the pattern, but it cannot have experienced it.

AI disclosure. Ask directly how they use AI in their work and how they disclose it. Genuine operators answer this specifically because they've thought about it and are conscious of the divide between AI and their own personal expertise. They can tell you which parts of their work AI helps with, and which parts it can't touch. Manufactured credential operators tend to avoid this question or answer it abstractly because it's all they've ever known.

None of these questions are unfair. Any operator with 25 real years will answer them in seconds. The difficulty of the question is the signal.

The Market Harms Both Sides

The flooding of this market with manufactured credentials harms two groups. Enterprise buyers are the obvious ones, where they engage with someone who looked credible, pay for deliverables that look like strategy, and then discover the gap when the situation becomes adversarial. The gap between "understands the playbook" and "has done this under pressure" surfaces when you least want it to.

The second group is practitioners who actually built the expertise. Selfishly, I'm one of them. I have twenty-five years across Fortune 500 VP roles, real incidents with real stakes, decisions made under pressure with visible consequences. The market flood doesn't just dilute pricing. It will eventually appropriate skepticism to everyone uniformly, because enterprise buyers have correctly learned that signals have become unreliable. The burden of proof has increased for everyone, but especially for the people for whom it should be the easiest.

As you go into your next advisor evaluation, the gap between what someone appears to know and what they've actually done always surfaces eventually. The discipline to use AI as an extension of thinking rather than a substitute for it is a choice an individual makes. Those that care about you and your company mission, won't rely on AI to give you the answer. Your job, before the crisis arrives, is to figure out which choice your advisor made.

That's not a framework question. That's a conversation.
